Filter Sponges & Filter Mats
Filter mats or filter sponges act as a mechanical filter medium. They trap coarse and fine particles from the water, such as leaves, algae, and dirt. When using, place the mats or sponges in the filter compartment of your pond filter. It is important to check them regularly and, if dirty, carefully rinse them with pond water to preserve the beneficial bacteria.
Avoid using tap water, as it can kill the beneficial bacteria. Also avoid (chemical) cleaning agents, as these can be harmful to fish, plants, and other living organisms in your pond.
Zeolite
Zeolite is a natural mineral that is best known for its ability to remove ammonia from the water. Before use, you must first rinse the zeolite thoroughly. Then place it in a net or filter bag and place it in the filter or directly in the pond.
Zeolite can become saturated over time. To regenerate it, you can soak it in a salt solution overnight and then rinse it thoroughly before reusing it.
Bio Balls
Bio balls are designed for biological filtration and provide a large surface area for the growth of beneficial bacteria. These bacteria help break down harmful substances such as ammonia and nitrites. Place the bio balls in the biological compartment of your pond filter. They require little maintenance, but it is good to check them occasionally.
If they are dirty, rinse them gently with pond water to preserve the beneficial bacteria. Again, avoid using tap water and chemical agents.
