Autumn Cleaning Maintenance

Leaf Pollution in Your Pond

In autumn, many leaves can fall from trees and plants. Once these enter your pond, they can start to break down and rot. This can cause a lot of extra pollution in your pond. The ecosystem in your pond may not be able to process all of this, which can lead to many harmful substances.

If the leaves are not broken down, this can still happen in the spring once your pond is reactivated by the sun and higher temperatures. This can cause pollution in the spring and can make your pond green and cloudy. Therefore, prevent leaves from becoming a problem in your pond in time.

Collecting Leaves in Your Pond

You can collect leaves in your pond in several ways.

Collecting with a Skimmer

A skimmer helps to collect surface debris. Leaves are automatically drawn to the skimmer, where they are collected in a net. You can empty this from time to time, so your pond remains easily free of leaves and other surface debris.

Removing with a Dip Net

You can also remove leaves from the surface of your pond with a dip net. This takes a little more effort, and you need to be there on time.

Removing from the Bottom

If leaves have sunk to the bottom anyway, remove as much as possible so that they cannot cause pollution in your pond. Especially in winter, this can cause harmful substances.
